Richard O'Connell - Life Drawing

Cardiff artist and VOGA member, Richard O'Connell treated a class of members and guests to some excellent tuition in the skills involved in drawing the female form from a life model.

Richard highlighted and contrasted two very different principles of approach to pencil drawing, using historical examples and a live demonstration. Members then sketched the model from several poses, and this was be followed by a slide show with examples of more drawings and illustrations.

"Oil Painting Techniques"

Penarth artist Sheridan Ward demonstrated a variety of oil painting techniques.

Originally from Norfolk, Sheridan has been a professional artist for nearly twenty years, working on both private and corporate commissions.

Currently, her paintings are on display in Fountain Fine Art in Cardiff and the Lion Gallery in Hay on Wye.

Deborah Withey - "Gyotaku"

Gyotaku is the ancient Japanese process of printing from real fish onto rice paper. Originally a means of documenting a prize catch, it is now an art form in its own right.

Deborah gave a unique demonstration of this amazing method of printing, and produced some lovely work during the evening.

Some examples of members' class work

Julie gave a fascinating demonstration of several different techniques, including encaustic painting, use of gold leaf, and methods of printing with leaves onto textiles and homemade papers.

Julie provided explanation of her process for developing her unique art works. She also gave a demonstration in the use of a hot air (paint stripper) gun, and was probably the first artist at Old Hall to wash pure gold down the sink! (Small particles of gold leaf - probably not worth prospecting the drains of Cowbridge for this...)
